Puritan Reading Challenge Book Giveaway (March)

For the month of March, Banner of Truth has graciously agreed to sponsor the giveaway to be done at the end of this month. We are giving away four excellent titles by Thomas Watson with a retail value of over $60! I am very excited about this and look forward to seeing these books become useful resources in the hands of God’s people. Here’s how it will work this month: On Monday, March 31st, I will post an open thread for everyone who has read The Godly Man’s Picture to share your thoughts about the book, primarily answering the question, “How has this book been useful to you personally and/or ministerially?” The purpose I have in mind is that we remember the “uses” of the doctrines we are learning together–that there is no doctrine that does not have application. The post will remain up for two days, giving everyone an opportunity to respond. On Wednesday, I will do the random drawing (computer generated) out of the responses given in the comments of the open thread (post). Once the winner is notified privately, I will make that public here at P&P.

Here are the books that will be given away this month. Be sure to check them out!

1. A Body of Divinity by Thomas Watson
From Charles Spurgeon: “Thomas Watson’s Body of Practical Divinity is one of the most precious of the peerless works of the Puritans; and those best acquainted with it prize it most. Watson was one of the most concise, racy, illustrative, and suggestive of those eminent divines who made the Puritan age the Augustan period of evangelical literature. There is a happy union of sound doctrine, heart-searching experience and practical wisdom throughout all his works, and his Body of Divinity is, beyond all the rest, useful to the student and the minister. Although Thomas Watson issued several most valuable books, comparatively little is known of him – even the dates of his birth and death are unknown. His writings are his best memorial; perhaps he needed no other, and therefore providence forbade the superfluity.”
List: $16.00

2. All Things for Good by Thomas Watson
Description: In this fine study of Romans 8:28, Thomas Watson explains how both the best and the worst experiences work for the good of God’s people. Previously “A Divine Cordial.” Watson simply but profoundly explains how God does in fact make all things work together for the good of His people. One of the most useful explanation of Romans 8:28 ever written. In light of last month’s read on providence, this book speaks much of God’s divine purposes.
List: $8.00

3. The Lord’s Prayer by Thomas Watson
Description: Makes up, with A Body of Divinity and The Ten Commandments, Thomas Watson’s complete Body of Practical Divinity. Implore the Spirit of God. We cannot say, ‘Our Father,’ but by the Holy Ghost. God’s Spirit helps us, not only to pray with sighs and groans, but with faith. The Spirit carries us to God, not only as to a Creator, but a Father. ‘God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.’ Gal 4: 6. ‘Crying:’ there the Spirit causes us to pray with fervency. ‘Abba, Father:’ there the Spirit helps us to pray with faith. The Spirit helps faith to turn the key of prayer, and then it unlocks heaven.
List: $22.00

4. The Beatitudes by Thomas Watson
Description: More than most of Watsons’ generation he sought to follow the example of Christ’s teaching by employing all manner of illustrative material from common life, and with simplicity and charm he spoke words not easy to forget. Two hundred years after Thomas Watson’s death William Jay of Bath said that he could go to any one of his books and ‘find it ever fresh, pointed and instructive.’ Glean insight and wisdom from one of the most readable and practical Puritans providing commentary on the Beatitudes.
List: $16.00

Let me say a special thanks to Banner of Truth for their support of this project. Let me encourage you to consider the excellent selection of Banner of Truth books online.

  1. Phil Baiden Says:

Is this available to UK readers?

“How has this book been useful to you personally and/or ministerially?”

How has it not been useful? I find myself reading one sentence and then going down a path that has been opened up to me.
I’ll think about my answer in more depth in time for 31st March!

    God bless, Timmy.

  2. Phil,

Yes. We have several folks in the UK in the reading challenge, as well as people from Zambia, South Africa, Japan, and other countries around the world.
