Self-Disclosure Meme

I have been tagged by Micah Fries and Les Puryear with the “Self-Disclosure” meme where I am supposed to disclose seven facts about myself. Knowing that these facts will not alter your life in anyway, I thought I would provide some biographical “firsts” to make it a little more fun (and embarrassing).

1. The first person I ever met in school was Caleb Clanton, on the monkey bars, at Julian Newman Elementary School in 1985. We are still best friends to this day, except he is monkeying around as professor of philosophy (ahem, Dr. Clanton) at Pepperdine, and I am making a career out of being a seminary student! We still like to kick around Kierkegaard and debate issues of religious pluralism.

2. I had my first “real” (okay sort of real) girlfriend in the fifth grade. Two other things happened during this time: the first time I was beaten in arm wrestling (of all people, my girlfriend!) and was the first flag corp captain of Brookhill Elementary School (yeah baby!).

3. The first song I ever memorized (not counting Children’s Church) was “2 Legit 2 Quit” by MC Hammer in the 6th grade. I used to get down – trust me.

4. My first trophy was when I came in third place at the Mary Esther Elementary Turkey Trot in 1983. My second was when I played in the Little League World Series the following year.

5. I first learned to type when, in middle school, I would open the World Book Encyclopedia and begin typing through entire entries, sometimes four hours a day!

6. The first drafts to half my blogposts come while in the shower; the other half come in the car on the way home from work at 4:00 a.m.

7. The first book I ever read was Left Behind when I was 19 years old. Needless to say, I left it behind too. ;)

Now, no one is allowed to do any psycho-analysis of these seven facts!

I am supposed to tag seven other bloggers, and since I have just come to meet some of you, I am going to tag:

Jennifer Partin, Jerry, Mike Leake, Kevin Rhyne, Caleb Burnison, Justin Nale, and David

You mean, we can’t even ask how these facts make you feel?!?!? ;-)

    [/dumb SBTS "inside joke"]

  2. Okay, I was reading through my “bookmarked” Blogs and thought I was reading P&P but was rather surprised by the unusually different and personal post that I had to literally stop and make sure I was really reading Tim Brister’s Provocations and Pantings! They say parenthood changes you……

The Self -Disclosure Meme was unlike any post you have written in the past, and it was a welcoming read for me on a Saturday afternoon realizing that I just learned a little bit about who YOU are as a person in “real life”. Enjoyed reading your disclosures.

I’ll post my answers soon—-thanks for tagging me! :)

  3. Caleb Says:

So, you played in the actual national Little League World Series? The one that they show on TV? If so, that’s pretty awesome and I am very jealous.

  4. Jerry Says:

    Oh, thanks, I think.

  5. Phil Smoke Says:

Ha ha ha! That is AWESOME! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Jennifer,

I know it was different. I had to pause and count to ten before I posted it. But it was fun anyway. :)

    Caleb,

Yeah, it was, but you have to remember that it was before the time of ESPN coverage, cool uniforms, etc. Back then the uniforms were polyster and tight! All I really remember is one big fat kid who hit it over the fence everytime which did not make it fun, and then afterwards going to McDonald’s and putting french fries on the batter’s bat on my trophy, then eating it (the french fry that is).

  7. D.L. Kane Says:

Delightful! “2 legit 2 quit” I had a visual going on that one. LOL

Perhaps Sibbes should have used that as a title to one of his chapters. :-)

  8. re: “The first book I ever read was…when I was 19 years old.”

    -Alabama public education at work!

No psycho-analysis here, but what about some historical analysis?

Apparently Timmy memorized “2 Legit 2 Quit” before he read his first book… unless he was also 19 years old when he was in 6th grade… and listening to “2 Legit 2 Quit” way after M.C. Hammer was cool.

    :)

  9. dec Says:

And now you’re reading the Puritans.

I’d say there was a turning point somewhere in there. :-)

  11. Letitia Says:

Whew, I’m glad you didn’t name me. There’s a lot of books in my read list that are doozies as well. But I can proudly say that I’ve never read any Left Behind. :)

    *Letitia*

  12. Jim Pemberton Says:

Who says these won’t alter my life? I graduated high school in 1985. My first girlfriend was Leslie Garbig in kindergarten. That would have been 1971; long before you were born, sonny boy. Since when did other people get younger than me? :P (Actually, my wife hadn’t been born yet either cone to think of it, so maybe it’s not too bad.)

  13. D.L. Kane,

That was one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time. 2 Legit 2 Quit is quite appropriate for Sibbes!

    Andrew,

Alabama public education made it possible for me to get through English and Lit while having only watching the movies and read a few cliff notes. It’s a shame, I know. I can remember helping some of my former high school students who were seniors writing essays for their college scholarship application. I couldn’t believe it when I saw that they could not write in complete or coherent sentences!

    dec,

Turning point indeed. Perhaps no greater signpost for me was going to Mr. Zion Chapel Library in Pensacola, Florida where I met my first Puritan Paperback!

    Letitia,

I have an entire bookcase of books that I have hidden that I do not allow anyone to see. For the first two years of reading, I had no direction, counsel, or guidance on knowing what to get, so yeah, you could imagine what I read. I spend too much money on books that have now been turned into fire-starters.

    Jim,

Graduated high school in 1985?! Dude, you had to have had a mullet and bleached jeans back then. Me? I wore Jams. :)

  14. Kevin Rhyne Says:

Uh, thanks Tim…I don’t know what to say…literally.

I guess to improve my blogging content, I need to start driving around town about 3:00 a.m… ;)

  15. The meme was pretty funny. It was also fun to see who would play along—-did you see Tim Challies’ and Thabiti (Pure Church)’s Self Disclosure Meme? Thabiti’s was hilarious, I enjoy his Blog and was quite surprised by some of his answers. Once again, look what you have started! :)

  16. Mike Leake Says:

    Timmy,

Thank you very much for tagging me, I was actually quite shocked. Also, one of my first books was Left Behind. I am glad that I too have left that behind. Has anyone ever heard what Paul Washer said about that book?…”The only thing that was ‘Left Behind’ was the Bible”. That may be a little strong, but funny still. Here is mine

  17. Timmy,

I posted mine as well. Here’s a cool thing. We were referenced on the banneroftruth.org website for reviewing banner of truth books and endorses the Puritan Challenge 2008.
