My grandfather, James Nolan Brister, was a very influential figure in my life. Growing in poor, rural Mississippi, my grandfather was a man of many “firsts” for my family. He was the first to graduate high school, then college (Mississippi College), and then seminary (SBTS grad of 1941). He preached the gospel faithfully for almost seven decades, and just as impressive, continued to fall in love with his bride whom he had been married for 65 years. During Thanksgiving 2005, my grandfather left us to be with His Savior whom he walked with by faith. I had the privilege of eulogizing him–one of the greatest honors of my life. My grandmother is still with us, 90 years strong, and the first picture is of her, my father, me, and baby Nolan–who was named after my grandfather (as I was). Needless to say, it was a special moment for my grandmother to hold my son–a woman who held my grandfather’s heart for so many years.
This past week, we have spent several days with both sides of our family which has been great! Lots of baked beans, potato salad, BBQ, and chicken stew. Nolan is starting to smile, make noises, and even laugh a time or two which makes me talk more and more with a soprano voice (I’m just glad that part has not been recorded – yet). So while I was not blogging or reading my Bible this week, here is what I was doing:

Have a great weekend!

James,
Hey brother. I have been thinking about you and your family this past week in light of the passing of your father last year. I trust that God’s presence with be your comfort, and God’s peace will be your guide as you and your family reflect on the love and life of your father. God bless you brother.

What a beautiful and touching post! May your son not only share your grandfather’s name but also share in your grandfather’s godly legacy!
